The "10-Tab Checklist": How to See Exactly Why Google Likes Your Competitors More Than You (In Under 2 Hours)

Have you ever searched for your own service on Google, looked at a competitor sitting in the #1 spot, and thought: “How on earth are THESE guys ranking above me? We do way better work than they do!”

If you ask a typical marketing agency why that happens, they will throw confusing tech jargon at you. They’ll talk about “domain authority,” “algorithms,” or “meta tags,” and then ask you for $1,500 a month.

The Reality Agencies Won't Tell You

Here is the truth that agencies don't want you to know: Google is not a mysterious wizard. It is a pattern-matching machine.

When someone in your city searches for a service—let’s say, "plumber chicago gold coast"—Google looks at the top 10 websites on page one to see what they have in common:

9 / 10

Service Breakdown

If 9 out of 10 of those pages have a specific breakdown of services, Google decides: “Okay, any page that deserves to be on Page 1 MUST have a service breakdown.”

6 / 10

Instant Booking & 24/7

If 6 out of 10 clearly state “24/7 Emergency Service” and have an instant booking form at the top, Google treats that as the gold standard.

1 or 2

Conversion Weapons

If only 1 or 2 of them show a side-by-side price comparison table or display their exact State License number, those are the hidden “conversion weapons” that turn nervous website visitors into paying customers.

If your webpage is just a 300-word summary about how “we are a family-owned business that cares about quality,” Google simply ignores you. Not because your business is bad, but because your page is missing the mandatory building blocks.

The good news? You don’t need to know a single thing about SEO to fix this. You just need two hours, a cup of coffee, and a simple spreadsheet.

Here is the exact, step-by-step “10-Tab Checklist” method we use to reverse-engineer any local market.

Step 1

Open an Incognito Window and Open 10 Tabs

10 Minutes

First, open a private/incognito window in your browser (so your past searches don’t mess up the results).

Type in the #1 phrase a customer would use when they are ready to hire you right now. Make it specific to your service and your most profitable neighborhood or city (for example: "roofer dallas tx" or "plumber chicago gold coast").

Skip the paid “Sponsored” ads at the very top, and skip directories like Yelp, Angi, or Thumbtack. Look at the first 10 real local business websites that show up. Open all 10 of them in separate browser tabs.

Label them in your head (or on paper) as C1 (Competitor 1) through C10 (Competitor 10).

Step 2

Build Your “Feature Matrix” Spreadsheet

15 Minutes

Open a blank Excel sheet or Google Sheet.

Across the top row, make columns for C1, C2, C3, C4, C5, C6, C7, C8, C9, and C10, plus a column for Frequency (%) and Status.

Down the left side, list the physical sections and trust elements a customer actually sees on a webpage. Here are the 12 core features you should write down to start:

01
Direct Click-to-Call Phone Button at the very top
02
Full Breakdown of Individual Services
03
List of Neighborhoods / Zip Codes Served
04
On-Page Contact / Quote Request Form
05
24/7 or Same-Day Service Mention
06
Exact State or City License Numbers Displayed
07
Real Customer Reviews / Testimonials on the Page
08
Mention of Specific Local Property Types (e.g., high-rises, historic homes, commercial)
09
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Section
10
Coupons, Discounts, or Price-Match Guarantees
11
“Us vs. Competitors” Comparison Table
12
Step-by-Step “How We Work” Process
Step 3

Go Tab by Tab and Mark ✅ or ❌

60 Minutes

Now comes the detective work. Put on some music and go through all 10 competitor tabs, one by one. Read every single page from top to bottom.

If Competitor 1 has an on-page contact form, put a ✅ in their column. If they don't include customer reviews on that page, put an ❌.

When you finish auditing all 10 competitors, count how many ✅ marks each feature got and calculate the percentage.

To show you what this looks like in the real world, here is an actual audit we ran for the search term plumber chicago gold coast:

Feature / Content Section C1 C2 C3 C4 C5 C6 C7 C8 C9 C10 Frequency (%) Ideal Page Status
Direct Click-to-Call Phone CTA ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ 100% Mandatory
Scope of Services Breakdown ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ ❌ 90% Mandatory
Service Areas / Neighborhood List ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ 100% Mandatory
On-Page Lead Capture / Contact Form ✅ ❌ ❌ ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ ❌ ✅ ❌ 60% Recommended
24/7 Emergency Service Positioning ❌ ✅ ❌ ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ ❌ ✅ ❌ 60% Recommended
High-Rise / Historic Property Focus ❌ ✅ ❌ ❌ ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ ❌ ❌ 50% Recommended
Explicit State/City License Numbers ✅ ❌ ✅ ❌ ✅ ❌ ✅ ❌ ❌ ❌ 40% Differentiator
Coupons / Special Offers / Price Match ✅ ❌ ✅ ✅ ✅ ❌ ❌ ❌ ❌ ❌ 40% Differentiator
Client Testimonials / Reviews On-Page ❌ ✅ ❌ ❌ ✅ ❌ ❌ ✅ ❌ ❌ 30% Differentiator
FAQ / Q&A Section On-Page ❌ ✅ ❌ ✅ ✅ ❌ ❌ ❌ ❌ ❌ 30% Differentiator
Competitor Comparison Table ❌ ❌ ❌ ❌ ✅ ❌ ❌ ❌ ❌ ❌ 10% Differentiator
Step-by-Step Service Process ❌ ✅ ❌ ❌ ❌ ❌ ❌ ❌ ❌ ❌ 10% Differentiator

Look at how clear that table is. Suddenly, SEO isn't a mystery anymore—it's just simple math:

70% to 100% Frequency = MANDATORY

These are your admission tickets to Page 1. If 90% of your competitors have a detailed services breakdown and 100% have a neighborhood zip code directory, you cannot rank without them.

10% to 49% = DIFFERENTIATORS

Your Unfair Advantage. Look at the bottom of the table. Only one competitor (C2) explained their 5-step service process. Only one (C5) used an “Us vs. Them” comparison table. Only four showed their exact City License numbers.

Step 4

Spot the “Fatal Flaw” in Your Competitors' Pages

30 Minutes

While you are filling out your table, you will notice something shocking: None of your competitors have a perfect page.

When we looked closely at those 10 Chicago plumbers, we found a massive split:

⚠️ Fatal Flaw #1 • Competitors 1, 6, 7 & 9

Superficial Service Copy

They did a great job mentioning the local neighborhood (Gold Coast and zip codes 60610/60611), but their actual service descriptions were super thin and generic.

⚠️ Fatal Flaw #2 • Competitor 2

Geo Copy-Paste Contamination

They wrote incredible technical details about fixing water pressure on the 40th floor of high-rise condos and using thermal cameras to find concrete slab leaks... but they made a copy-paste mistake and left the name of a completely different neighborhood (“River North”) in their text!

Every single competitor on Page 1 is only doing half the job right.

When you combine the mandatory sections (the 90–100% items) with the best conversion differentiators (the 10–40% items) onto one single page on your website, two things happen:

🤖

1. Algorithmic Dominance

Google's algorithm sees your page as the most complete answer in the city.

📞

2. Immediate Conversion

Homeowners who are comparing 3 or 4 tabs see that you are the most transparent, trustworthy expert—and they call you first.
